Biography:

  • He completed his secondary education at Tarsus American College and graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1982.
  • In 1984, he started his professional studies at Ankara University Medical School Department of Psychiatry. 
  • In 1985, he went to England as a scholarship of the Council of Europe and worked on "Community Psychiatry" in Nottingham and London. 
  • As a result of his work, the report of the Council of Europe was found successful and he was given another scholarship opportunity. 
  • In this process society has worked on different models of mental health services and has had the opportunity to examine models of community psychiatry to integrate individuals with chronic illnesses into reintegration from large mental hospitals.
  • In 1986 he earned a British Council scholarship and worked as an assistant at the Institute of Psychiatry in London and the Royal Hospitals of Maudsley and Bethlem until 1988. 
  • During this time, she has been trained in the fields of "Behavior Therapies", "Sexual Dysfunctions-Sex Therapies", "Marriage Therapies" and "Anxiety Disorders" (such as phobia, obsessions, panic, trauma) and studies conducted jointly by England-America- He served as a British team's therapist. 
  • He returned to Ankara University Medical Faculty in 1988 and became a Psychiatric Specialist in 1990 and a Doçenti Psychiatric Clinic in 1992.
  • He concentrated on his work after the associate professorship especially on "Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies", "Sexual Dysfunctions and Sexual Treatments", "Marriage Therapies" and "Anxiety Disorders", and founding chairman of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies Association in 1996 and Sexual Education, He has been a founding member of the Association for Therapy and Research and coordinator of the Cognitive-Behavioral Psychotherapies working group of the Turkish Psychiatric Association. 
  • He currently serves as the chairman of the Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies Association and the coordinator of the Family and Couple Therapy Unit of the Psychiatric Association of Turkey.
  • He served as an international multidisciplinary congressional president of "International Sexual Dysfunctions and Infertility" in 1996 and served in the organization of international congresses called "Sexual Education, Treatment and Research Association (CETAD) Days" in 1998 and "Sexual Problems and Treatments" . 
  • He is the member of the National Cigarette and Health Committee and in the mid 1990s he established the first "Smoking Cessation Center" in Ankara with the Department of Chest Diseases at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine. 
  • In 2000, she held the 1st International Convention on Sexual Disorders (Convention on International Sexual Disorders) and held the Conventions Presidency.
  • In 2000, he was elected president of the European Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (EABCT). During this duty, he organized and conferred the 31st European Congress of Behavior and Cognitive Therapies in Istanbul in 2001. 
  • In 2011, he was honored and pleased to chair the 7th International Congress of Cognitive Therapy (ICCP), which is a world congress, and the task and responsibility of organizing in Istanbul. 
  • In 2012, she was the co-chair of the National Congress of Sexuality and Sexual Treatment.
  • In 1998, the project for the treatment and reintegration of schizophrenia patients, along with his colleagues, received an international award (Lilly Schizophrenia Reintegration Award). 
  • In the same year, he received the 1998 Nusret Fisek Public Health Service Award for education-treatment services and contributions to health, which were carried out as a member of the National Cigarette and Health Committee. 
  • Another project he prepared in 1999 with his colleagues on trauma was the Spring Symposium of the Association of Psychiatry 1999 Research Project Incentive Award.
  • Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies, Sexual Dysfunctions and Sexual Therapies and Marriage Therapy, as well as members of the advisory committee of some international journals on the same fields. 
  • These papers are titled "Behavioral and Cognitive Psychotherapy", "Journal of the British Association for Sexual and Relationship Therapy", and "Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice" and "Cognitive Therapy and Research". 
  • Within the country, he has been the editor of the magazine "The World of Psychiatry" for practitioners and psychiatric assistants. More than 100 articles and various books and editors are published in national and international scientific journals. 
  • He has also participated as a guest speaker at hundreds of congresses in Turkey and abroad. Various working groups have conducted. 
  • He has worked in the training of the professionals in different countries and these tasks are still going on.
  • Dr. Sungur was first enrolled as a Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist by the UK Council for Psychotherapy and the Biritish Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies and was listed on the list of registered therapists. 
  • He is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the European Cognitive and Behavior Therapy Association (EABCT) Accreditation and Certification Committee, a member of the executive board of the 'Common Language Use in Psychotherapies' committee, Member of the International Cognitive Therapies Association (IACP) Board Member, American Psychiatric Association (APA) member, and Beck Cognitive Therapy He is a founding member and a certified trainer and consultant of the Academy (ACT) and has diplomatic and supervisor titles from ACT.
  • Dr. Sungur is presenting a new and up-to-date "Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy Training Course" for psychiatry professionals (psychologists, psychiatrists, etc.) who are currently working in the field of psychiatry both at home and abroad.
  • Prof. Dr. Mehmet Z. Sungur was elected as the next term president of the International Cognitive Therapies Association (IACP), which was headquartered in the US in 2015. 
  • Thus he became the first non-American president of these international cognitive therapies association.
  • Mehmet Zihni Sungur, professor in 2001, is currently a member of Marmara University Medical Faculty Psychiatry Department.
