Biography:

  • Victor G. Vogel, MD, MHS, FACP, became Director of the Cancer Service Line of the Geisinger Health System in May 2010, and currently serves at the Director of Breast Medical Oncology/Research. Prior to coming to Geisinger, he served as the National Vice President for Research for the American Cancer Society in Atlanta, Georgia from January 1, 2009 until April 30, 2010.
  • Before joining the ACS, Dr. Vogel was Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and was Co-Director of the Magee-Womens Hospital/University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute Biochemoprevention Program from January 1996 through December 2008.
  • Prior to that appointment, he was the Deputy Chairman of the Department of Clinical Cancer Prevention at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP), the NIH Women's Health Initiative Data and Safety Monitoring Committee, and the Central IRB of the National Cancer Institute. 
  • Dr. Vogel earned his medical degree from Temple University Medical School in Philadelphia, and served an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Baltimore City Hospitals and a fellowship in Medical Oncology at the Johns Hopkins Oncology Center.
  • He earned a Master of Health Science degree in epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health where he was an Andrew W. Mellon Fellow in clinical epidemiology.  
  • Dr. Vogel is a Fellow of the American Colleges of Medicine and Preventive Medicine, and he is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, and General Preventive Medicine/Public Health.
  • He is a recipient of numerous honors and awards, including a Career Development Award from the American Cancer Society, a research fellowship from Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Achievement Medal from the US Public Health Service, and the Impact Award from the National Consortium of Breast Centers in 2009 for outstanding dedication and exceptional accomplishments in the fight against breast cancer. He is listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and The Best Doctors in America.
  • He served as the National Protocol Chairman of the National Cancer Institute's STAR Trial (Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene). Dr. Vogel is the author of more than 250 articles, book chapters, and abstracts.
  • He edited the books Management of Patients at High Risk for Breast Cancer and Handbook of Breast Cancer Risk Assessment: Evidence-Based Guidelines for Evaluation, Prevention, Counseling, and Treatment. He published Doctor, What if it Were Your Mother? Hope, Faith and Reason at the End of Life in 2014.
