Fetal Medicine

Fetal medicine is a formal subspecialty of obstetrics, focusing on the diagnosis and management of complications that may occur during pregnancy. It is a rapidly expanding scientific branch, which brings together not only obstetricians and perinatologists but also neonatologists, geneticists, neonatal nurses and many other healthcare professionals. The use of fetal medicine is to increase the safety of the mother and fetus by minimizing the risk of genetic and chromosomal abnormalities, preeclampsia, as well as preterm labor and delivery. Additionally, fetal medicine can be used to detect structural defects, genetic syndromes, and syndromes caused by chromosomal anomalies. These are all important tools for making the best possible decisions for pregnant women, both neo-natal and long-term.
