Biography:

  • I am a NIH R01-funded principal-investigator at Wake Forest School of Medicine (WFSM), where I have crossdisciplinary appointments as an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Biostatistical Sciences (Division of Public Health Sciences) and Clinical Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI). In the Department of Radiology, I serve as Chief of Neuroradiology and Vice Chair of Informatics. 
  • I also serve as director of the CTSI Translational Imaging Program, managing all institutional imaging research at WFSM. 
  • In addition, I am the founder/director of the Radiology Informatics and Image Processing Laboratory (RIIPL). 
  • RIIPL focuses on high throughput “big data” processing and analysis of multimodal imaging data (e.g., magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, magnetoencephalography) across a number of species, including humans, non-human primates, swine and rodents. As a neuroimaging physicianscientist, I have specific doctoral training in neurophysiology and neuropharmacology, which has allowed me to develop new imaging protocols and techniques for novel in vivo imaging. 
  • I also have a strong informatics background and extensive training in epidemiology/public health research methodologies as a graduate of the Gillings School of Global Public Health at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. 
  • Taken together, my training and experience has provided me with the critical skills necessary to lead large-scale translational studies of disease at the population level. 
  • In addition to my own R01 funded work, I presently direct the image processing efforts of our recently funded Cancer Center P01 (CA207206-01A1) and Alzheimer’s Disease Center (P30 AG049638), as well as several other collaborative NIH funded projects listed below. 
  • As a board-certified Diagnostic Radiologist with focused subspecialty fellowship training in neuroradiology, I have interpreted thousands of computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and other imaging studies to evaluate a variety of complex pathologic processes across the spectrum of disease. 
  • My clinical and research neuroimaging experience has resulted in appointments at the national level, including the Research Committees of the Christopher T. 
  • Whitlow Curriculum Vitae Page 8 American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR), American Society of Functional Neuroradiology, and American College of Radiology (ACR) Head Injury Institute. 
  • I am also co-chair of the Traumatic Brian Injury-Reporting and Data System (TBI-RADS) Committee of the ACR Head Injury Institute that is developing national standards for brain imaging data acquisition and clinical reporting in the setting of traumatic brain injury. 
  • As co-chair of the international multidisciplinary ASNR Study Group for the Clinical Translation of Advanced Diffusion and Functional MRI, I am working to develop new neuroimaging biomarkers for a variety of diseases that affect the brain. 
  • These efforts overlap with my role as Co-Chair of the DTI Profile Committee for the RSNA Quantitative Imaging Biomarkers Alliance. 
  • Through my research, clinical practice and national/international service, I am at the cutting edge of neuroimaging translation from bench-top to clinical practice.
