Pediatric ophthalmology is a subspecialty of ophthalmology (eye care) dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of eyesight and vision-related problems in children of all ages. It is important for children to receive regular eye exams and treatments due to the fact that many eye conditions can have an impact on their vision, which can affect learning and development. Pediatric ophthalmologists use a variety of diagnostic tools to assess the health of a child’s eyes, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), and fundus photography. Treatment for pediatric ophthalmology can include eye glasses, contact lenses, vision therapy, and surgery.
