Overview

Myeloid leukemia is a group of cancers of the blood and bone marrow that arise from the myeloid lineage of blood-forming cells, in which abnormal cells proliferate and crowd out normal blood production. The resulting deficiency of healthy red cells, white cells, and platelets leads to anemia, susceptibility to infection, and bleeding tendencies. The two principal forms are acute myeloid leukemia (AML), which progresses rapidly with the accumulation of immature blast cells, and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), which typically advances more slowly and is characterized in most cases by the Philadelphia chromosome and the resulting BCR-ABL fusion gene. Diagnosis relies on blood and bone marrow examination, cytogenetic and molecular testing, and immunophenotyping, while treatment may include chemotherapy, targeted agents such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Early and accurate diagnosis, along with adherence to therapy, strongly influences outcomes. Research grouped under this topic reflects several of these areas, including transformation of myelofibrosis into Philadelphia-positive chronic myeloid leukemia, cutaneous lesions in acute myeloid leukemia with neutropenia, the role of neuropilin-1 in leukemogenesis, medication adherence in chronic myeloid leukemia, chromosomal findings such as the Philadelphia chromosome, complications of stem cell transplantation, and molecular biomarker and proteomic-genomic approaches relevant to cancer diagnosis and personalized medicine.
