Overview
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disorder of the central nervous system in which immune-mediated damage to nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord disrupts neural function. Its symptoms range from sudden, temporary changes in muscle strength, vision, and balance to the gradual worsening of cognitive, sensory, and motor function. MS is thought to arise from a combination of genetic and environmental factors, typically begins in young to middle-aged adults, and follows either a relapsing or a progressive course. The hallmark of the disease is damage to myelin, the lipid- and protein-rich sheath that insulates nerve fibres and enables rapid signal conduction. Because myelin and the wider nervous system depend on proteins and their constituent amino acids, MS connects to the molecular biology of these building blocks of neural tissue. The journal publishes research relevant to this molecular and biochemical context, including studies of rehabilitation and occupational therapy, disability and prognostic factors, phototherapy interventions, vaccine safety, and the developmental biology of myelin-producing oligodendrocytes and their signalling pathways. Key aspects of study include the breakdown and repair of myelin, the cellular and molecular mechanisms of demyelination, the relapsing and progressive course of disease, and clinical and rehabilitative approaches to managing its varied symptoms.
