Overview

Pharmacology is the science of how chemical agents interact with biological systems, integrating the study of drug action on molecular targets (pharmacodynamics) with the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of compounds within the body (pharmacokinetics). It spans the identification of drug targets, characterization of dose-response relationships, mechanisms of efficacy and toxicity, and the rational design and validation of therapeutic agents. Major sub-areas include molecular and network pharmacology, which uses computational target prediction and pathway analysis to dissect polypharmacology and natural-product mechanisms; psychopharmacology; toxicology and safety assessment; and the pharmacology of cardiovascular, metabolic, and oncologic agents. Methods range from in silico modeling and structure-activity relationship analysis through in vitro disease models and enzyme-inhibition assays to in vivo and clinical evaluation. Work grounded in this area includes network-pharmacology strategies for predicting therapeutic targets of phytochemicals such as beta-sitosterol, mechanistic studies of essential-oil combinations, structure-activity relationships of xanthones as kinase inhibitors, hypolipidemic and antihypertensive drug evaluations, preclinical cardiotoxicity testing, and the safety profiling of immunoglobulin-based agents. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research across experimental, computational, and translational pharmacology, connecting molecular mechanism to drug discovery, efficacy, and safety in the context of biochemistry and applied therapeutics.
