Overview
Cell biology is the branch of the life sciences that studies the structure, function, organisation, and behaviour of cells, the fundamental units of living organisms. It examines how cells are built from membranes, organelles, cytoskeletal elements, and macromolecules, and how these components work together to carry out the processes of life, including metabolism, growth, division, signalling, and death. Central themes include cell communication and signal transduction, the regulation of gene expression, the cell cycle and its control, and the molecular mechanisms that govern cell fate and differentiation. Modern cell biology is closely integrated with molecular, genomic, and computational approaches: studies using human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes, for example, employ calcium-transient assays to interrogate cellular function and screen compounds, while computational analysis of regulatory single-nucleotide polymorphisms links genetic variation to transcription-factor binding and disease. The discipline is also fundamental to understanding pathology, since many diseases, most notably cancer, arise from disturbances in the cellular and molecular processes that normally control proliferation, survival, and tissue organisation, as explored in work on the initiation and development of sporadic solid tumours. By revealing how normal cells operate and how these mechanisms fail, cell biology provides the conceptual and experimental foundation for genetics, developmental biology, immunology, and medicine, and it underlies advances in diagnostics, drug discovery, and regenerative therapy.
