Oversight

What the editorial board does

The editorial board is responsible for the journal’s scholarly content. Its members read submissions in their own fields, choose and weigh the reviewers, take the decision on each manuscript, and act on concerns about the integrity of the work.

Every member below holds the role of editorial board member, and manuscripts are handled by the member whose field the submission falls in.

    Deciding whether a manuscript addresses a question inside the journal's stated remit, and returning work that belongs in a different journal. Aims and scope

    Review

    Selecting subject-matter reviewers, reading their reports, and weighing them against the manuscript. Editorial policies

Handling

How manuscripts are handled

Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal’s scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.

Manuscripts are assessed for scope, scholarly quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, and research integrity.

Independence

Decisions rest with the handling editor and are independent of fees, services, memberships, or any role an author holds with the journal or the publisher.

Competing interests and recusal

Board members handle manuscripts in their own areas and are expected to decline any manuscript in which they hold a competing interest; a manuscript authored by an editor is handled independently of that editor.

Integrity

Research with human participants

Almost everything the journal publishes involves people who agreed to take part in it, which is what the board is reading for when it assesses a submission’s ethics.

  • Approval and consent. Research involving human participants must be conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki, and authors must declare Institutional Review Board or ethics committee approval, confirm that informed consent was obtained, and confirm adherence to applicable national and institutional privacy regulations.
  • Measurement. Instruments should be identified, and their scoring and psychometric basis described well enough for a reader to judge what was measured.
  • Reporting. Every empirical research manuscript must include a data-availability statement.
  • Trial registration. Interventional clinical trials must be registered in an accepted public trial registry at or before the first participant provides consent for enrollment. The registry name, registration number, and registration date must be reported in the manuscript.

Researchers working in the journal’s domains are welcome to review for it. The reviewer guidelines set out what a report should cover and how the journal handles manuscript files; the editor guidelines describe how a handling editor works through a submission.
