Overview

Disability is a long-term limitation in physical, sensory, intellectual, or psychological function that, in interaction with environmental and social barriers, restricts a person's participation in everyday activities. Contemporary understanding frames disability not solely as an individual impairment but as the product of the relationship between health conditions and the surrounding context, with consequences for health, wellbeing, and social inclusion. Research in this area examines disability arising from chronic disease, including the progression and prognostic factors of multiple sclerosis, the disabling effects of osteoarthritis and hip disease, and the long-term outcomes of people living with HIV on antiretroviral therapy. The psychosocial dimensions of disability are prominent, encompassing depression and the role of social support among people with disability, the measurement of self-determination and quality of life for those with intellectual disabilities, and oral and general health-related quality of life. Chronic pain and its management, and the broader impact of disability on daily functioning, further define the field. Research in this area characterises the causes and trajectories of disability across health conditions, evaluates its effects on quality of life, mental health, and social participation, and assesses interventions and support systems intended to reduce barriers and improve outcomes for people living with disability.
