Where to submit to the Journal of Human Psychology, what to prepare first, and what happens once the manuscript arrives.

Four things to settle before you submit
Most manuscripts returned at screening are returned for one of these four reasons, and each is quicker to settle now than after submission.
- Does the work fit? The journal publishes research on human psychological processes and behavior. The deciding question is whether a psychological construct, mechanism, experience or behavioral outcome is central to the contribution — not which field supplies the setting or the method. Aims and scope sets out the boundary, with worked examples on both sides of it.
- Which article type? The type governs the word limit, the abstract structure and the reporting guideline that applies. Instructions for authors carries the limits for each.
- Are the declarations ready? Ethics approval, informed consent, competing interests, funding and a data-availability statement are required at submission, not at revision.
- Do you know what publication costs? There is no submission or review fee. An article processing charge is raised only after a manuscript has been accepted. Article processing charges states the amount and the terms.
Authors who are unsure whether a manuscript sits inside the remit are welcome to write to the editorial office ([email protected]) with a short summary before preparing it in full.
Where to submit
Authors must use only one submission route for the same manuscript.
Three routes are available and they are not equivalent. Use the portal unless there is a reason not to: it is the route the journal’s editors work in, and it is the only one that gives an author a record of the manuscript’s progress.

For an author who cannot use either route above — an accessibility requirement, a file the portal will not take, or an institutional network that blocks it. Write to the editorial office and the manuscript will be entered into the system for you.
Every route leads to the same screening, the same reviewers and the same decision standards. None of them is faster than another, and choosing one over another has no bearing on the outcome. Sending the same manuscript by two routes creates two records of it and delays both.
What to have ready
The same set of files whichever route you use. Full formatting requirements are on the instructions for authors.
Required
- Manuscript file in Word format, with the structured abstract and keywords.
- Title page with full author names, affiliations, ORCID iDs where available, and the corresponding author’s contact details.
- Tables and figures with descriptive titles and legends, and all abbreviations defined.
- Declarations: ethics approval, informed consent, competing interests, funding, and a data-availability statement.
- Cover letter stating what the study adds and why it fits the journal.
Where it applies
- Trial registration details — registry name, number and date — for an interventional trial.
- Reporting checklist for the design: CONSORT, STROBE, PRISMA or COREQ.
- Instrument details for each psychological measure used, including the version and any translation or adaptation.
- Anonymized manuscript if you are requesting double-blind review, with identifying information supplied separately.
- Supplementary files: protocols, instruments, data dictionaries or analytic code.
What happens after submission
Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.
All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal’s scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.

A decision may be accept, minor revision, major revision, or reject, and a manuscript may be returned at screening without external review. Where revisions are requested, respond point by point and mark the changes in the revised file. Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
An author who considers a decision to rest on a misreading of the work may appeal; the route is on the editorial policies page.
What publication costs
There is no fee to submit and no fee for peer review. An article processing charge is raised only after a manuscript has been accepted, and the decision to accept is taken before any charge is discussed.
