What publishing in the Journal of Human Psychology costs, when the charge becomes payable, and what it pays for.

What it costs
Two rates apply, and each is charged once, after a manuscript has been accepted.
- Standard article processing charge
- USD 1,200Per accepted article. The same amount for every article type.
- Student rate
- USD 900Per accepted article, where the corresponding author holds valid undergraduate or graduate student identification.
- Submission
- USD 0No fee to submit a manuscript.
- Peer review
- USD 0No fee for editorial screening or peer review, whatever the outcome.
The charge is the same for every article type, so the length or format of an accepted manuscript does not change what it costs. Amounts are in United States dollars.
When the charge applies
Editorial decisions are independent of ability or willingness to pay.
The article processing charge is raised only after a manuscript has been accepted, and the decision to accept is taken before any charge is discussed. A manuscript that is rejected, returned at screening, or withdrawn within the period below is not invoiced.
Peer review is unaffected by any of this. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Payment, membership, language editing, or any other paid service has no bearing on the assessment of a manuscript, on the order in which manuscripts are handled, or on the outcome. Payment does not shorten peer review, and it does not affect where an article is discoverable or how often it is cited.
What the charge pays for
The journal charges no subscription and sells no access, so publication is funded by the charge on an accepted article. It covers the work between acceptance and the permanent record.
Editorial handling
- Managing peer review, including reviewer identification and the handling editor’s assessment.
- Screening for text overlap with Crossref Similarity Check, powered by iThenticate.
- Checking ethics documentation, declarations and reporting compliance.
- Handling revisions, appeals and any post-publication correction.
Production and the record
- Copyediting, typesetting and proofing.
- Producing the article in HTML, PDF and XML.
- Registering the DOI with Crossref under the prefix 10.14302 and depositing the article metadata.
- Committing the content to Portico for long-term preservation, and keeping the article open access under CC BY 4.0.
If the charge is an obstacle
Authors for whom the charge would prevent publication are invited to write to the editorial office at [email protected] before submitting. Raise it early: the conversation is easier before a manuscript is in review than after it is accepted.
A request is a matter for the billing office and has no bearing on the editorial assessment of the manuscript. The handling editor does not see it, and it plays no part in the decision.
Corresponding authors who hold valid student identification pay the student rate shown above.
How payment works
After acceptance the corresponding author receives the acceptance letter and an invoice with a secure payment link. Production begins once payment is arranged.

Funding the charge
- Budget for it in the grant. Publication costs are an allowable expense under most research funders, and are simplest to cover when they are in the original proposal.
- Check for an institutional fund. Many university libraries hold an open-access publication fund; your librarian will know whether yours does and what it covers.
- Ask about tax treatment locally. Article processing charges are commonly treated as a research or professional expense by universities and funders, but whether a charge is deductible or reclaimable depends on local regulations and your institution’s accounting policies. Consult your finance office or tax adviser.
Withdrawing a manuscript
Authors should contact the editorial office promptly and wait for written confirmation before submitting the work elsewhere.
Manuscripts withdrawn within 3 days of submission are not subject to a withdrawal charge.
Manuscripts withdrawn more than 3 days after submission incur a withdrawal charge equal to 30% of the journal’s APC.
Authors must receive official withdrawal confirmation before submitting the manuscript to another journal.
Withdrawal requests go to the editorial office at [email protected]. The confirmation matters for the author as much as for the journal: it is the record that the manuscript is no longer under consideration here, which the next journal will expect.

Is there a fee to submit?
No. There is no charge to submit a manuscript and no charge for editorial screening or peer review, whatever the outcome.

Is the charge payable if the manuscript is rejected?
No. The charge applies only to a manuscript that has been accepted for publication.

Does the charge differ by article type or length?
No. The standard charge is the same for every article type, and the student rate is the same for every article type.

Is language editing included?
No. Language editing is a separate service, billed separately, and using it has no bearing on the editorial assessment of a manuscript.

Who holds copyright?
The authors. Every article is published open access under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license, and readers may reuse the material, including commercially, provided the original is attributed.

Can the charge be split between institutions?
Yes. For a manuscript with authors at more than one institution the charge can be divided across contributing departments. Arrange it with the billing office when the invoice is issued.
