What the editorial board does
Every manuscript submitted to the Journal of Otolaryngology Advances is handled by an editor working in the field the manuscript belongs to. The board supplies that subject expertise: it judges whether a submission falls inside the journal’s scope, approaches the reviewers who examine it, weighs their reports, and takes the decision that follows.
The board provides subject expertise for clinical, surgical, translational, laboratory and methodological ENT submissions. Manuscripts are assessed against the approved scope, with evidence expectations suited to their claims and design.
- Assess a submission for scope, ethical compliance and methodological quality before reviewers are approached.
- Select reviewers with relevant otolaryngology subspecialty expertise and no conflicts of interest.
- Weigh the reviewer reports and take the editorial decision on the manuscript.
- Judge whether a revision answers the concerns raised, and commission further review where a major change requires it.
- Escalate concerns about plagiarism, data integrity or authorship to the editorial office for formal review.

How editorial decisions are governed
An editorial role carries a responsibility, not a privilege. It does not secure acceptance, a preferential review, a faster decision or any other advantage for the editor who holds it or for anyone the editor knows, and the rules below apply to every manuscript the journal receives.
- Editorial independence
- Editorial decisions are taken by the handling editor and the editorial board on the evidence of peer review. The article processing charge falls due only after a decision has been made and has no bearing on it.
- Decision criteria
- Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
- Reviewer selection
- Editors select reviewers with relevant otolaryngology subspecialty expertise and no conflicts of interest.
- Conflicts of interest
- Authors, reviewers and editors must disclose conflicts of interest. An editor discloses a conflict as soon as it arises and declines an assignment where the conflict requires it.
- Confidentiality
- Editors treat every manuscript as confidential and use submitted material only for editorial evaluation.
- Research integrity
- Concerns such as plagiarism, data integrity and authorship disputes are escalated to the editorial office for formal review, and errors found after publication are addressed through published corrections or retractions.
- Appeals
- An author may appeal a decision with a clear rationale and supporting evidence. Appeals are reviewed by senior editors.
- Screening
- All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.
- Peer review
- Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
